SNW Permabit Meeting Update
The last briefing of the show was Permabit. They provide a tier two storage platform that they call Value Tier. This is a capacity optimized, highly scalable, highly reliable tier of storage designed for near active data. The performance and reliability of this storage is now to the point where it can be used for more than just archiving old data that hasn't been accessed in years. It is an ideal platform for any data that is not currently active.

This is an important differentiator because instead of using this type of storage for the 60-75% of data that has not been accessed in the last 2 years, its rapid restoration capability enables customers to be more aggressive and move data to this tier the moment it becomes inactive. This means that potentially 90% of data on primary storage can be moved to this secondary tier with little or no performance impact.
You are probably going to have to buy some form of storage over the next few years. Would you rather buy that storage at $10+ per GB or $1 per GB?
