Micron’s P300
Micron’s P300
Storage Switzerland was briefed by Micron, a leading semiconductor manufacturer of DRAM and NAND Flash memory products headquartered in Boise, ID with facilities around the world. They’re an integrated vertical supplier manufacturing the entire product from semiconductor NAND substrate to flash controller to final drive-form factor SSD. This enables Micron to have control over the entire process, producing better quality flash devices and a better process as well. Since they have access to every step from packaging down to the silicon Micron can control potential QA issues down to the substrate level. This can be especially important for OEM customers that often need to trace issues back to the component production process.

The P300 is Micron’s new 2.5-inch SLC NAND flash solid state device packaged in a hard drive replacement enclosure. It features a 6Gb/s SATA interface and comes in 50GB, 100GB and 200GB capacities. With sequential READ/WRITE rates of 360/255 MB/s sustained, Micron says the P300 is the highest performing SATA enterprise SSD in the industry. Because of the adoption advantage SATA has over SAS in the market (see “SSD Connectivity Options” for more information) the P300 is a flash SSD that can fit into more potential applications.
The orders-of-magnitude performance advantages over spinning disk drives that SSDs like P300 have can give users a simple path to increased application performance (see “Improving Storage Performance in the Mid-sized Enterprise”) without creating another complex and expensive project. With its 6Gb/s SATA interface, the P300 offers a cost effective alternative to SAS SSDs in enterprise storage applications as well.
