Briefing Note - Xangati
Before server virtualization we talked about the need for application performance management and focused on the specific resource elements or silos which were essentially connected to every server. Fixing a performance issue usually involved ‘throwing hardware at the problem’ by upgrading one or more of these silos. In a virtualized environment this doesn’t work, since resources are shared between virtual machines (VM). Increasing resources for individual VMs involves the more dynamic process of resource allocation and managing the effects of the network. And, instead of simply upgrading a silo the focus has shifted to infrastructure performance management.

Unfortunately, most performance management tools still present a ‘silo-centric’ view, something that’s useful but not the most effective for pinpointing problems or optimizing resources in the environment. However Infrastructure Performance Management systems, like Xangati’s Management Dashboard, provide a ‘cross silo’ approach focused on interactions between these silos. Xangati takes data feeds from each of the elements in the environment - servers, network components, storage, applications, end-user devices - and presents information from a perspective within each and outside of each element. Xangati’s software can be downloaded and running as a physical or virtual server in less than an hour and requires no agents. It provides real-time, continuous input from each element to a single pane of glass and allows recordings of these live data (like a DVR) so that problem scenarios can be replayed and resolved more quickly.
Along with abstraction of the physical servers from the VMs, the virtualized environment seems to abstract funding as well. Although server virtualization is driving infrastructure investment, unfortunately the money is often spent elsewhere in the environment; on storage, on the network and on servers. All too often the virtualized infrastructure admin doesn’t get the budget needed for management tools and has to rely on storage, networking or other elements for help.
For a majority of companies that are looking into infrastructure management solutions, the days of 6-figure deployments and 6-person IT teams to implement and run them are gone. According to CEO Alan Robin, Xangati is aware of the realities of infrastructure management solutions in a virtualized environment. “For Xangati it’s a matter of principle; implementation is key. The time between download and value should be exceedingly short. Once you have to deploy agents or probes the level of effort to get to this value point is extended significantly. Xangati doesn’t require agents or probes, we offer a free download and can provide value in less than 30 minutes.”
