VMworld Briefing Note - Isilon Systems
The big news for Isilon Systems at the show was their announcement of iSCSI support in their storage solutions in addition to their existing support for NFS and CIFS. This is an ideal situation for companies looking to leverage scale out storage for their server virtualization projects. It provides the ability to utilize NFS for the bulk of the environment and iSCSI for those particular situations like clustering that NFS can’t cover yet.

Storage Switzerland delivered its presentation on “Simplifying Storage In Virtual Server Environments” in the Isilon booth several times during the VMworld event because we believe that using NFS to host virtual server images and scale out storage are two important methods in reducing the storage complexity of that server virtualization can cause.

VMworld Briefing Note
Storage Switzerland is at VMworld in force again this year and as in years past we will be doing our best to bring you continuous updates from the event. These reports are quick summaries of our meetings at the show; look for more detailed analysis on our blogs on Network Computing.
As we discuss in the above video clip, when looking at storage systems it is important to define what questions you should be asking your suppliers to try to understand which storage system makes the most sense for you. We are finding increasingly that the answers to those questions are driving legacy storage vendors to attempt to sell multiple individual storage arrays that increase management complexity and of course cost. Customers should be evaluating more modern architectures that allow for a great level of scale from both a capacity and a I/O perspective. Scale out storage is an excellent example of a modern architecture that can help you resolve the answers to those key questions.
