VMworld Briefing Note - APTARE
APTARE just released new version StorageConsole 8. This release added the Fabric Manager module to an SRM suite consisting of Capacity, Backup, Virtualization and Replication Manager modules. Fabric Manager is designed to provide end-to-end visibility into the storage network and help network personnel better manage the change that occurs in all dynamic environments. In addition, this module can help identify bottlenecks and optimize network performance by showing details like I/O response times, queue depths and port utilization, to name a few. Fabric Manager, as part of the StorageConsole platform, essentially completes the picture and gives IT a comprehensive look into the environment.

In StorageConsole 8, APTARE enhanced the Capacity Manager module by adding support for HP EVA and improved their virtualized storage support, including thin provisioning. Backup Manager was also enhanced with deduplication support for EMC Avamar.
What’s interesting about APTARE, aside from what their SRM solution does, is what they don’t do. They don’t require agents, making implementation and maintenance easier. Also, being independent they don’t tie you to a disk array vendor, as most SRM solutions do. As VP of Marketing Tony Wessels said, “You can’t manage what you can’t measure”, referring to the fact that SRM tools which are tied to a specific storage platform don’t give you a comprehensive look at the environment. “It’s human nature to over-provision, especially in a virtual server environment. We help IT ‘create capacity’ by optimizing the storage infrastructure.“
And, they’re not a startup. According to Wessels, “APTARE is the largest non-vendor SRM solution, with over 450 enterprise customers worldwide. We have a 95% year-on-year support renewal rate and we’ve been in business for 17 years.”
