VMworld Briefing Note - Arkeia
Arkeia Software develops and markets the Arkeia Network Backup Suite, an enterprise backup and disaster recovery system for mid-sized organizations with single and multi-site environments. Recently released, Arkeia Network Backup v8.2 supports VMWare’s vSphere 4.1.
Arkeia’s VMware agent leverages the vStorage API to provide backups without proxy servers or agents on the hypervisor. It supports VMWare’s Changed Block Tracking to create an incremental, or ‘thin’ image backup, which writes only changed blocks within the image file. The result is faster backups and less storage capacity used.

On the restore side, the VMWare backup agent can provide file-level restores from backed up images, and supports Raw Device Mapping for remote backups. It’s also integrated with vCenter and vApp to support multiple ESX environments easily.
In addition to the traditional backup software application, the Arkeia Network Backup server is available as an appliance. This 2U device comes loaded with the Arkeia software and includes up to 10TB of disk backup space and an optional internal tape drive. Of course, external tape and disk storage devices can also be connected. The Arkeia Virtual Appliance offers the same features and functionality, but allows companies to use their own hardware and run the system on a VM.
Arkeia software also includes native, client-side deduplication. According to CEO Bill Evans, “Deduplication at the client just makes more sense. It reduces bandwidth requirements, improves scalability by providing data reduction at the source and cuts down on the amount of data handled and processed throughout the backup system”. Coming with the acquisition of technology leader Kadena Systems in 2009, Arkeia’s “sliding window” dedupe process can adjust the size of the data blocks it parses automatically. It’s also content aware, meaning the software can make this adjustment based upon the file type involved, improving dedupe efficiency.
Arkeia simplifies the backup process by enabling physical and virtual servers to be backed up with the same system - the Arkeia Network Backup server. They also offer real enterprise backup with an advanced client-based dedupe technology that’s developed internally, not bolted on. For companies looking to consolidate their backup environment by eliminating a separate application to support VM backups from their physical backups, Arkeia has a compelling solution set. Arkeia’s products support over 150 platforms and are currently in use by 7000 customers in 70 countries.
